If you’re a fan of The One Show on BBC, or a film buff in general, then you will have enjoyed a piece recently about the National Science & Media Museum in Bradford. You may know it as a Victorian mill town in West Yorkshire, but in fact it’s a place which has a long history with the film and television industries, which some find surprising.
Bradford, the home of the first IMAX screen in Europe when it opened in 1983, has been used for filming of many film classics such as Billy Liar, Brassed Off, This Sporting Life, and The Railway Children. For television, the likes of Band Of Gold, Peaky Blinders, Downton Abbey and Emmerdale have all been shot in and around Bradford. Famous names including Timothy West, Peter Firth, Ade Edmondson, Heather Peace and Mary Tamm all hail from the city too. And of course, you can’t leave out David Hockney, arguably Bradford’s most famous son – he has done set design so we’ll include him in our little list.
With a long relationship with the film industry, in 1983 Bradford decided to set up a museum to acknowledge the achievements of the city and was awarded UNESCO City of Film status in 2009.
